Likströmstimulering

Likströmstimulering, often referred to as direct current stimulation (DCS), is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that uses a constant, low-intensity electrical current delivered to specific areas of the brain via electrodes placed on the scalp. This current flows between an anode (positive electrode) and a cathode (negative electrode), creating a weak electrical field that influences neuronal activity in the targeted region.

The primary goal of likströmstimulering is to modulate neuronal excitability. Typically, anodal stimulation (placing the anode over the target area) tends to increase neuronal excitability, making neurons more likely to fire. Conversely, cathodal stimulation (placing the cathode over the target area) generally decreases neuronal excitability, making neurons less likely to fire. The precise mechanisms by which DCS exerts its effects are still under investigation but are thought to involve altering the resting membrane potential of neurons and influencing synaptic plasticity.

Research into likströmstimulering explores its potential therapeutic applications for a range of neurological and psychiatric conditions. These include conditions like depression, stroke rehabilitation, chronic pain, and cognitive impairments. Studies often investigate the effects of DCS on specific cognitive functions, motor skills, and mood states. The intensity of the current used in DCS is typically very low, generally between 1-2 milliamperes, and the duration of stimulation varies depending on the experimental protocol. While generally considered safe, potential side effects are usually mild and transient, such as itching or tingling at the electrode sites.
