Liikemääränsiirtoon, also known as numerical relativity, is a subfield of general relativity that focuses on the numerical solution of Einstein's field equations for the purpose of understanding strong-field gravity phenomena.

In the early days of general relativity, the state of the art in solving the Einstein field equations was limited to static, spherically symmetric systems. However, with the advent of the computer, it became possible to solve these equations numerically for more complex systems, such as binary black hole or neutron star systems.

The key idea behind liikemääränsiirtoon is to discretize the spacetime continuum into a grid of points, and then evolve the Einstein field equations using iterative methods. This approach allows for the simulation of general relativistic effects, such as gravitational waves, black hole formation, and inspiral.

One of the earliest and most influential methods developed in the field was the Baumgarte-Shapiro penalty method, which solves the Einstein field equations using a finite difference approach. Since then, a variety of other methods have been developed, including the Carpet framework and the Einstein Toolkit.

While the challenges involved in simulating strong-field gravity phenomena are significant, the development of improved methods has revolutionized our understanding of these complex systems.

Numerical simulations have also enabled precision tests of general relativity and have played a crucial role in the detection of gravitational waves by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).
