Lihasjänteydessä

Lihasjänteydessä, known in English as muscular dystrophy, is a group of genetic diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. The inherited defects cause the body to produce little or no dystrophin, a protein that helps keep muscle fibers intact. Over time, this can lead to an inability to walk, stand, or sit without support.

There are many different types of muscular dystrophy, each with its own set of symptoms and progression. Some forms are present at birth or in early childhood, while others may not appear until adulthood. The most common form, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, typically affects boys and begins in early childhood. Becker muscular dystrophy is a milder form that affects boys and men and usually appears later in childhood or adolescence.

Symptoms can vary widely depending on the type of muscular dystrophy, but common signs include frequent falls, difficulty climbing stairs, walking on toes, muscle pain, and delayed motor milestones. While there is no cure for muscular dystrophy, treatments can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. These may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, medications to manage pain or other symptoms, and assistive devices such as wheelchairs. Research into new treatments and potential cures is ongoing.
