Ligande

Ligande is a term used in several Scandinavian languages to denote lying or the state of being in a lying position. It originates as a present-participle form from verbs meaning to lie down (such as ligga or ligge). As such, ligande can function as an adjective meaning lying, or as a noun referring to the act or condition of lying. In medical and anatomical contexts, the word is applied to describe a patient’s position, for example in phrases like ligande stilling or i liggende posisjon, depending on the language.

Forms and usage vary by language. In practice, ligande-related forms appear with small spelling differences across Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian, reflecting each language’s standard participle and noun conventions. In Swedish, the common form is liggande; in Danish and Norwegian uses, liggende or related variants are encountered. Older texts or regional dialects may show alternate spellings such as ligande. The term is primarily a linguistic or terminological one and is not commonly used in English-language medical writing, where comparable terms like supine or prone are preferred.
