Lietteenkäsittely

Lietteenkäsittely refers to the processes involved in managing and treating sludge, which is the semi-solid residue of wastewater treatment. This sludge is a byproduct of both domestic and industrial wastewater treatment plants and contains a concentrated amount of pollutants removed from the water. The primary goals of lietteenkäsittely are to reduce its volume, stabilize its organic content, and remove or destroy harmful substances to make it safe for disposal or beneficial reuse.

Common methods for lietteenkäsittely include thickening, dewatering, stabilization, and disposal. Thickening reduces the water content, making the sludge easier to handle. Dewatering further removes water, often using mechanical methods like filter presses or centrifuges, resulting in a drier cake. Stabilization can involve biological processes like anaerobic digestion, which breaks down organic matter and can produce biogas, or aerobic digestion. Chemical stabilization is also used.

Once stabilized and dewatered, sludge can be disposed of in several ways. Landfilling is a common method, though increasingly regulated. Incineration can reduce volume and destroy pathogens but requires energy and careful management of emissions. Beneficial reuse is a growing area, with treated sludge potentially used as fertilizer or soil amendment in agriculture, or for energy production through processes like anaerobic digestion.
