Li2Si2O5

Li2Si2O5 is the chemical formula for lithium disilicate, a lithium-containing silicate compound. As a crystalline phase it is widely studied and used in synthetic glass-ceramics. In nature the compound is not known as a common mineral, and it is typically produced in industrial or laboratory contexts.

In dental materials, Li2Si2O5 crystals are formed in lithium disilicate glass-ceramics by controlled crystallization of a glassy Li2O-SiO2 matrix through heat treatment. The resulting material combines a tough crystalline phase with a glassy matrix, improving mechanical properties and esthetics.

Manufacturing involves melting silica and lithium oxide sources, forming a homogeneous melt, quenching to a glass, then heat-treating to induce crystallization.

Applications include dentistry—crowns, veneers, and bridges—and engineering glass-ceramics where high strength and translucency are valued.

Properties include high strength and fracture toughness, favorable translucency, and compatibility with standard dental processing; the material generally exhibits good chemical durability and thermal behavior suitable for veneering and restorative use.
