Leértékeléssel, often translated as devaluation or depreciation, refers to a decrease in the value of a currency relative to other currencies or to a basket of currencies. This can occur in a floating exchange rate system where market forces determine the currency's value, or it can be a deliberate action by a government or central bank in a fixed or managed exchange rate system.

Several factors can contribute to leértékeléssel. Economic weaknesses such as high inflation, large trade deficits, or significant government debt can erode confidence in a currency, leading to its depreciation. Conversely, a stronger economy with lower inflation and a positive trade balance tends to strengthen a currency. External factors like global economic conditions, interest rate differentials between countries, and geopolitical events also play a significant role.

The consequences of leértékeléssel can be mixed. For a country experiencing depreciation, its exports become cheaper for foreign buyers, potentially boosting export-oriented industries and improving the trade balance. However, imports become more expensive, leading to higher prices for consumers and businesses that rely on imported goods or raw materials, which can fuel inflation. This can also make it more expensive for a country to repay its foreign currency-denominated debt. Central banks may intentionally devalue a currency to stimulate economic growth or make their exports more competitive.
