Levynopeus is a Finnish term that translates to "record speed" or "disk speed." It most commonly refers to the rotational speed of a vinyl record during playback. This speed is crucial for accurately reproducing the audio information embedded in the record's grooves. The standard playback speeds for vinyl records are 33 1⁄3 revolutions per minute (RPM), 45 RPM, and historically, 78 RPM.

The correct levynopeus is determined by the format of the record. LPs (Long Play) and EPs (Extended Play) are typically designed to be played at 33 1⁄3 RPM, allowing for longer playing times. Singles, especially those with a single song per side, are often pressed at 45 RPM, which can offer slightly better fidelity due to the wider grooves. The older 78 RPM speed was common for early records made of shellac and offered shorter playing times compared to modern formats.

Playing a record at the incorrect levynopeus will result in distorted audio. If played too slowly, the pitch will be lowered, making the music sound deeper and slower. Conversely, playing a record too fast will raise the pitch, resulting in faster and higher-pitched audio. Turntables, the devices used to play vinyl records, are designed to maintain a consistent and accurate levynopeus to ensure proper playback. This consistency is achieved through a motor and drive mechanism, often with pitch control adjustments for fine-tuning.
