Levonorgestrelkierukka refers to an intrauterine device (IUD) that releases levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestogen. This type of IUD is a highly effective, long-acting reversible contraceptive method. The levonorgestrelkierukka is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare professional and can remain in place for several years, typically three to eight years depending on the specific product.

The primary mechanism of action for the levonorgestrelkierukka is to thicken cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach the egg. It also thins the lining of the uterus, which can prevent implantation if fertilization does occur. In some cases, ovulation may also be suppressed, although this is not the main contraceptive effect.
