Origin and usage: The term is a straightforward compound of “letter” and “based” and appears in discussions of orthography, typography, and information systems to distinguish alphabet-centered approaches from numeric or graphic systems. It is not a formal technical standard with a universally fixed meaning, but is used descriptively across disciplines.

Applications can include alphabetic or text-based encoding schemes in computing, alphabetic sorting and indexing, and linguistics-based analyses that model data using letters as the primary symbols. In puzzles and games, letterbased formats rely on letter manipulation rather than numerical reasoning.
