Lesekreise
Lesekreise, singular Lesekreis, are informal, voluntary groups in German-speaking regions whose members meet to discuss texts. They focus on reading together and engaging in discussion to deepen understanding, encourage critical thinking, and broaden perspectives beyond casual reading. Meetings are typically small, with five to fifteen participants, and occur regularly, such as weekly or monthly. A reading list is agreed collectively; participants read assigned sections in advance. Each meeting usually features a rotating facilitator or a designated moderator who ensures an egalitarian discussion. Activities may include summarizing arguments, analyzing style and structure, debating interpretations, and situating the text in historical or interdisciplinary context. Some groups produce short notes or summaries for members, but the aim is open, participatory dialogue rather than formal instruction.
