Lemmin

Lemmin is a small commune located in the Bas‑Rhin department of the Grand Est region in northeastern France. The village occupies an area of approximately 5.3 square kilometres, with an elevation ranging between 154 and 325 metres above sea level. The terrain is largely agricultural, featuring a mix of wheat fields, vineyards, and patches of forested hills.

Historically, Le Mmin first appears in medieval documents as “Lemin” in the early 12th century, at which time it was a modest farming settlement within the archdeaconry of Metz. The area was affected by the Franco‑German border conflicts of the 17th and 18th centuries, and later incorporated into the German Empire following the 1871 Treaty of Frankfurt. After World War I, Le Mmin returned to French administration as part of the Alsace region. The commune lost a number of residents during the World Wars, although small memorials honor those who died.

The current municipal administration is headed by Mayor Jean‑Pierre Martin, whose term runs from 2020 to 2026. Le Mmin is part of the intercommunal structure of the Pays de Saverne and cooperates with neighboring villages on public services such as waste management and schooling. Its population has remained below 300 inhabitants according to the most recent census, with a slight decline as younger residents move to larger urban centres for employment opportunities. The local church of Saint‑Pierre, a 19th‑century limestone building, serves as the commune’s architectural focal point and is listed as a cultural heritage site.
