Leitungsspiel, also written Leitungsspiel or Leitungsspiele, refers to a form of structured group exercise used in education, youth work and corporate training to practice leadership, coordination and collaborative problem-solving. In such games one participant assumes the role of the leader and guides the group through a series of tasks or challenges. The leadership role may rotate among participants or be assigned by the facilitator.

The aims of a Leitungsspiel are to develop communication, listening, decision-making, delegation and conflict resolution, while providing a safe environment to explore different leadership styles and group dynamics. Debriefing after the activity is typically used to reflect on what happened, how roles affected outcomes, and what could be improved in real-world settings.

Typical structure involves an initial briefing, a sequence of tasks or scenarios with defined rules, time limits and objectives. The leader interprets the task, distributes duties, monitors progress and ensures participation and safety. After each round or at the end of the sequence, the group discusses processes, teamwork, and decision quality to extract lessons learned.

Variants of Leitungsspiele vary in complexity and focus. Some simulate project management or logistical challenges, others emphasize resource allocation, problem solving under pressure, or ethical decision-making. The approach can be adapted for different ages and contexts, from classroom games to professional development workshops.

Critics note that Leitungssiele can reproduce power imbalances if not facilitated carefully; successful use depends on skilled moderation, clear rules, inclusive participation, and a structured debrief to translate experiences into learning.
