Lehtitaloja

Lehtitaloja refers to a type of traditional Finnish wooden house, characterized by its use of birch bark (*lehti* means "leaf" in Finnish, referring to the bark) as a primary building material. These structures were commonly found in rural Finland, particularly in the northern and eastern regions, where birch trees were abundant. Lehtitaloja were often small, single-room dwellings used as temporary shelters, storage spaces, or seasonal homes, especially during the summer months.

The construction of lehtitaloja relied heavily on birch bark, which was harvested from living trees. The bark was peeled in long strips and layered over a wooden frame to create walls, providing insulation and protection from the elements. The roofs were typically made of thatch, pine branches, or other natural materials. These houses were lightweight, portable, and easy to assemble, making them ideal for nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyles, such as those practiced by Finnish herders and seasonal workers.
