Lehtikalastus

Lehtikalastus, or leaf fishing, is a traditional Finnish pastime that involves catching fish by hand from the surface of a body of water. The activity is particularly popular in Finland, where it has been practiced for centuries, often during the summer months. Unlike conventional fishing, which typically requires rods, reels, and hooks, leaf fishing relies on a simple yet effective technique that leverages natural materials and basic skills.

The method involves placing a flat, leafy branch or a specially prepared "leaf" (often made from birch bark or other flexible materials) on the water’s surface. The fisher then waits patiently, observing the water for signs of fish activity. When a fish takes the bait, it is typically a small species such as a roach, perch, or pike.
