Lawspeakers
Lawspeakers, or lögsögumaðr in Old Norse, were a class of legal officials in medieval Norse and Germanic societies, charged with maintaining and expounding the customary law. The title combines 'law' and 'speaker', reflecting their central function as the primary custodian and spokesman of the law at public assemblies.
In Iceland, the lawspeaker was a central figure at the Alþingi, the national assembly founded around 930.
