Lathyrogen-induced refers to a condition or effect caused by lathyrogens. Lathyrogens are chemical compounds that can induce a condition known as lathyrism. Lathyrism is a neurological disorder characterized by spastic paralysis of the lower limbs. This condition is primarily associated with the consumption of certain legumes, particularly species of the genus Lathyrus, which contain neurotoxins. The most well-known lathyrogenic compound is beta-N-oxalyl-L-alpha,beta-diaminopropionic acid (ODAP), found in grass pea (Lathyrus sativus).

The mechanism by which lathyrogens induce lathyrism involves the disruption of protein synthesis and metabolism. ODAP, for instance, is a structural analog of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter. It is believed to act as an excitotoxin, overstimulating certain neurons, particularly in the spinal cord. This overstimulation can lead to excitotoxicity, a process where nerve cells are damaged or destroyed due to excessive stimulation. Over time, this damage can result in the degeneration of motor neurons, leading to the characteristic spasticity and weakness observed in lathyrism.

While lathyrism is most commonly associated with dietary consumption of affected legumes, the term lathyrogen-induced can also be applied to experimental settings where these compounds are administered to study their effects on biological systems. Research into lathyrogens and their mechanisms of action is important for understanding neurodegenerative processes and for developing strategies to mitigate the risks associated with consuming lathyrus species, especially during times of food scarcity. Prevention involves avoiding or limiting the intake of lathyrus seeds, or processing them in ways that reduce the concentration of lathyrogenic compounds.
