Cultural and religious shifts often accompany these states as they adapt to changing boundaries and populations. The term emphasizes processes and patterns across different regimes rather than fixed dates.

Examples of lateImperial contexts include the late Roman Empire (roughly the 3rd to 5th centuries CE), the late Byzantine period in the centuries before the fall of Constantinople, the late Ottoman era spanning the 17th to early 20th centuries, and the late Qing dynasty of China in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
