Lataushybrideistä, officially known as plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), represent a transitional technology in automotive engineering, combining elements of both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). A PHEV is equipped with both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine, powered by a gasoline or diesel fuel. The key distinguishing feature is a rechargeable battery pack that can be plugged into an external power source, such as a home charging station or a public charging point, to replenish its energy.

This plug-in capability allows PHEVs to operate in electric-only mode for a certain range, typically between 20 to 50 miles, depending on the model and battery size. During electric-only driving, no tailpipe emissions are produced, offering environmental benefits for shorter commutes. Once the electric range is depleted, or when more power is required, the internal combustion engine seamlessly engages, acting as a generator to recharge the battery or directly powering the vehicle. This dual-powertrain system aims to provide the convenience and extended range of traditional gasoline cars while offering the potential for reduced fuel consumption and emissions associated with electric driving.

PHEVs offer flexibility for consumers who may not have consistent access to charging infrastructure or require longer travel distances. They can be charged overnight at home, ensuring a full electric range for daily driving. For longer journeys, the gasoline engine provides the necessary power and range without the need for frequent charging stops, mitigating range anxiety.
