Lastentwicklung

Lastentwicklung, literally meaning load development in German, is a concept in engineering that describes the systematic process of defining, modeling, and validating the loads and load histories a product or structure will experience during its life cycle. It serves to ensure safety, performance, and durability in design, analysis, and testing.

The scope of Lastentwicklung includes identifying operating conditions and functional requirements, collecting usage and environmental data, and accounting for manufacturing tolerances. It encompasses specifying the types of loads that can act on a component or system, such as static, dynamic, cyclic, impact, thermal, and vibro-acoustic loads, as well as how these loads combine and evolve over time. The aim is to create representative load cases and load histories that reflect real-world use and potential extreme scenarios.

The process typically involves several steps: defining the design scope and performance targets; gathering field data, test results, and literature; developing load models and scenarios; selecting worst-case and representative load cases; applying these loads to the design in simulations (for example finite element analysis, fatigue and durability calculations); planning and conducting physical validation tests; and documenting the results to guide iterative design improvements.

Applications of Lastentwicklung are widespread, including automotive and commercial vehicles, aerospace, civil engineering, machinery, and consumer products. It interacts with reliability engineering, safety assessments, and standards-driven development. A library of validated load cases and guidelines for applying loads helps ensure consistent design decisions, traceability, and compliance with regulatory and industry requirements.
