This glaze is typically a vitreous coating that, when fired, melts and fuses to the clay body, creating a hard, impermeable, and often decorative surface. The composition of glazes varies widely, but common ingredients include silica (which forms the glass), flux (to lower the melting point), and alumina (to provide viscosity). Colorants, such as metal oxides, can be added to achieve a wide spectrum of hues.

The application of glaze can be done in several ways, including dipping, pouring, brushing, or spraying. The thickness of the glaze layer is crucial, as it affects the final appearance and durability. Too thin a layer may not provide adequate protection or color, while too thick a layer can lead to cracking or crawling during firing. After application, the piece is fired in a kiln to a specific temperature, which causes the glaze to melt and chemically bond with the clay.
