Laserskanneri

Laserskanneri, known in English as laser scanners, are devices that use laser light to capture the geometry of physical objects and environments. They work by emitting a laser beam and measuring the time it takes for the light to reflect off a surface and return to the scanner. This time-of-flight measurement, combined with the scanner's known position and orientation, allows for the creation of precise three-dimensional point clouds.

There are several types of laser scanners, including terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) and mobile laser scanners (MLS). TLS units are typically stationary and mounted on tripods, ideal for detailed capture of buildings, infrastructure, or archaeological sites. MLS systems are mounted on vehicles, drones, or even handheld devices, enabling rapid data acquisition over larger areas or in dynamic environments.

The data generated by laser scanners, the point cloud, consists of millions or even billions of individual points, each with X, Y, and Z coordinates, and often intensity or color information. This raw data can then be processed using specialized software to create detailed 3D models, perform measurements, analyze deformations, or generate other types of geospatial products.

Laser scanning technology has found widespread applications in fields such as architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) for as-built documentation and progress monitoring, in manufacturing for quality control and reverse engineering, in heritage preservation for digital archiving, and in surveying and mapping for creating precise digital terrain models and city models. Its ability to capture complex geometries accurately and efficiently makes it a valuable tool for digital transformation across many industries.
