Larnach

Larnach refers primarily to Larnach Castle, a historic mansion on the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin, New Zealand. Built between 1871 and 1874 for William James Larnach, a businessman and politician, the house was conceived as a family residence in a Scottish Baronial style. The castle is noted for its brick and stonework, ornate interiors, and commanding position overlooking the harbor. The surrounding estate includes formal gardens and a family cemetery.

After Larnach's death by suicide in 1898 at the Parliament Buildings in Wellington, the property remained with his heirs and changed ownership several times. In the 20th century it fell into disrepair before being rescued by the Barker family, who purchased the property in the 1960s and opened it to the public in 1967. Since then, Larnach Castle has operated as a historic house museum and tourist site, offering guided tours, a cafe, and event facilities. It is widely described as New Zealand's only castle and remains a major attraction on the Otago Peninsula, drawing visitors for its architecture, gardens, and views.
