Largs

Largs is a town located on the west coast of Scotland, in the council area of North Ayrshire. Situated on the Firth of Clyde, it is a popular seaside resort with a long history. The town's name is believed to derive from the Gaelic word 'Lairg', meaning a high place or promontory. Largs has a picturesque promenade and a sandy beach, making it a favoured destination for day trips and holidays.

Historically, Largs is most famous for the Battle of Largs, which took place in 1263. This significant event saw the Scottish forces of King Alexander III defeat an invading Norwegian army led by King Haakon IV, effectively ending Norse claims to Scotland. The battle is commemorated by a statue in the town.

The town offers a range of amenities including shops, restaurants, and recreational facilities. Largs is also a departure point for ferries to the nearby island of Cumbrae. Notable attractions include the Pencil Monument, which marks the supposed landing site of the Norwegian forces, and Nardini's, a renowned ice cream parlour.
