Lappenpompen is a term originating from Dutch and German, generally referring to a specific type of bellows or pump mechanism. The literal translation, "rag pump," hints at its construction, often involving flexible materials like cloth or leather to create the pumping action. Historically, these devices were employed in various applications where a controlled flow of air or liquid was needed.

In its simplest form, a lappenpomp functions by manually expanding and contracting a flexible chamber. As the chamber expands, it draws in air or liquid, and upon contraction, it expels the contents through an outlet. This cyclical process allows for sustained pressure or volume delivery. Such mechanisms were commonly found in simple fire bellows, providing the necessary airflow to stoke flames, or in early agricultural tools for irrigation or pest control.
