Langustes

Langustes, also known as spiny lobsters, are marine crustaceans belonging to the infraorder Achelata. They are characterized by their long, stout bodies and formidable antennae, which are significantly longer than their legs. Unlike true lobsters, langustes lack claws on their first pair of legs. Their exoskeletons are typically spiny, providing a defense against predators. They inhabit warm seas worldwide, preferring rocky bottoms, coral reefs, and kelp forests where they can find shelter.

These nocturnal creatures are primarily scavengers, feeding on mollusks, crustaceans, and sea urchins. During the day, they remain hidden in crevices or burrows. Langustes are solitary animals, though they may congregate in larger numbers during mating seasons or in areas with abundant food. Reproduction involves the female carrying fertilized eggs attached to her pleopods until they hatch into planktonic larvae. These larvae drift in the ocean currents for several months before settling on the seabed to develop into juvenile langustes.

Economically, langustes are highly valued as a delicacy. They are caught using a variety of methods, including traps and nets. Overfishing has become a concern in some regions, leading to the implementation of conservation measures and fishing quotas to protect their populations. Their distinctive appearance and culinary appeal have made them a popular subject in both scientific research and popular culture.
