Langlochfräser

A Langlochfräser, also known as a slot cutter or mortising bit, is a specialized cutting tool used in woodworking. Its primary function is to create rectangular slots, also referred to as "langlöcher" (long holes) in German, which are essential for joinery techniques like mortise and tenon joints.

The tool typically consists of a router bit with a relatively short, straight cutting edge designed to plunge directly into the material. It is often used in conjunction with a template or jig to guide the router and ensure the accurate dimensions and placement of the slot. Some Langlochfräser are designed for use with a plunge router, allowing for controlled entry into the workpiece. Others are designed for specific machines like slot mortisers.

The material removed by the Langlochfräser is typically cleared out by a series of plunging cuts or by sweeping the bit across the desired slot area. This method creates a clean, precise rectangular opening, ideal for fitting a tenon.
