Lamówka

Lamówka is a sewing term referring to a finishing technique used to bind the raw edge of a fabric. It involves encasing the edge within a folded strip of fabric, typically of the same material as the main garment or a contrasting color for decorative effect. The lamówka is applied by folding the strip lengthwise and stitching it over the raw edge, creating a clean and durable finish.

This technique is commonly used on seams, hems, and necklines in garments, as well as on edges of accessories like bags and curtains. It not only prevents fraying but also adds a decorative element. The width and type of fabric used for the lamówka can vary depending on the desired aesthetic and the type of material being finished. Wider lamówki can provide more structure, while narrower ones offer a more delicate appearance.

There are several ways to apply lamówka, including single-fold and double-fold methods. The single-fold method involves folding the fabric strip in half lengthwise and stitching it to the right side of the fabric, then turning it to the wrong side and stitching again. The double-fold method involves folding the raw edges of the strip inward before enclosing the garment edge, creating a fully enclosed finish. Bias tape, which is cut on the diagonal grain of the fabric, is often used for lamówka as it allows for smooth curves and corners.
