Lakiyhteys refers to the Finnish term for "lake connection," describing the natural or artificial links between lakes within a watershed or drainage system. In Finland, where over 188,000 lakes cover roughly 10% of the country’s land area, these connections play a crucial role in hydrology, ecology, and water management. Lakes are often interconnected through rivers, streams, or man-made channels, facilitating the flow of water between them. This network supports aquatic ecosystems, influences water quality, and affects local climate by regulating temperature and humidity.

Historically, lake connections have been both a natural phenomenon and a subject of human intervention.
