Lagrangepunkterne

Lagrangepunkterne, also known as Lagrange points or L-points, are specific locations in space where the gravitational forces of two large bodies, such as the Sun and Earth, and a smaller body, balance out. These points allow a smaller object to remain in a relatively stable position with respect to the two larger bodies.

There are five such points for any given two-body system, designated L1 through L5. The L1 point lies on the line connecting the two bodies, between them. The L2 point is on the same line but beyond the smaller of the two large bodies. The L3 point is also on the line connecting the two bodies but beyond the larger of the two large bodies. The L4 and L5 points form equilateral triangles with the two large bodies, located at 60 degrees ahead and behind the smaller body in its orbit.

Lagrangepunkterne are useful for space missions. For example, telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope are placed at the Sun-Earth L2 point to maintain a stable thermal environment and avoid interference from Earth's light and heat. Similarly, other celestial bodies, like asteroids, are often found clustered around the Sun-Jupiter L4 and L5 points, known as Trojan asteroids. The stability of these points varies, with L1, L2, and L3 being dynamically unstable, meaning objects placed there will drift away unless actively corrected. L4 and L5, however, are dynamically stable, and objects can orbit around them.
