Laggravation is a neologism used in discussions of systems and operations to describe the worsening of outcomes caused by time delays or lags in feedback or response. The term captures how delays can amplify problems rather than resolve them, turning small initial issues into larger hurdles as actions are postponed.

Origin and usage: The word combines lag, meaning a delay, with aggravation. It is informal and not part of formal engineering nomenclature, but it appears in technical blogs, team retrospectives, and scholarly discussions as a concise way to label a common phenomenon in complex systems.

Definition and scope: In a technical sense, laggravation occurs when a system's delayed response to an input triggers effects that would not arise with prompt feedback. This includes distorted decisions, uncoordinated actions, increased congestion, and greater work in later stages, as early problems are allowed to persist.

Domains and examples: In networks, high latency can provoke congestion control measures that increase delay further. In software development, late feedback can lead to repeated rework and schedule slippage. In manufacturing or supply chains, delayed sensing or reporting can cause batch defects and inventory buildup.

Measurement and relation: Laggravation is not a formal metric. Analysts may study it with time-lag analyses, simulations, or delay differential equations to assess how feedback delays influence system stability, throughput, or quality.
