Labour, or labor, refers primarily to the human effort used in the production of goods and services. It encompasses physical and mental work performed by workers. The term also denotes the process of childbirth (labour) and, in historical contexts, the activities of workers organized into social classes. In modern economics, labour is one of the main factors of production, alongside capital and land.

Labor markets match available workers with job opportunities. Wages and employment levels are influenced by productivity, skill, education, experience, and supply and demand conditions, as well as institutions such as minimum wage laws, collective bargaining, and social protections. Labour statistics include employment rates, unemployment rates, and labor force participation.

Labor movements have organized workers to improve wages, working conditions, and rights. Unions engage in collective bargaining and, if necessary, strikes. International bodies such as the International Labour Organization set standards and monitor compliance, though enforcement varies by country.

Contemporary labour issues include the growth of informal and gig economies, automation and outsourcing, and debates over job security versus flexibility. Global discussions address fair wages, safe workplaces, gender and racial equity, and the balance between productivity and social protection. The plural form “labours” is chiefly encountered in British English and tends to appear in historical or formal contexts when referring to multiple tasks or efforts.
