Loft is a term with multiple related meanings in architecture and housing. Traditionally, a loft is an upper area of a building under the roof, often used for storage or as an unfinished attic. In contemporary real estate, a loft most commonly denotes a large, open-plan living space created by converting an old industrial or commercial building into a residence. Such spaces emphasize openness, with few interior partitions and a generous ceiling height.

Common features of loft spaces include exposed structural elements such as steel beams or wooden joists, brick or concrete walls, and large windows that bring substantial natural light. Many lofts incorporate a mezzanine or lofted area for sleeping or storage, while the main floor remains at a single level. The interior design often favors minimalism and an industrial aesthetic, though fully finished modern lofts vary widely.

Loft conversions require attention to building codes and safety. Because they expand usable floor area, designers must plan for proper insulation, heating, ventilation, and sound control; access is typically provided by a staircase or sometimes a ladder, with appropriate fire escapes or second means of egress. Utilities such as plumbing and electrical services may need extension to the new level.

Beyond residential use, the term loft also appears in furniture and branding (for example, loft beds or loft apartments). The concept emphasizes flexible space, scale, and a sense of openness derived from tall ceilings and abundant natural light.
