Incest, often rendered as L'inceste in French, refers to sexual relations or marriage between close relatives, typically within degrees of kinship that a given society prohibits by law or taboo. Definitions vary, but common lines include parent–child and between siblings; relationships between more distant relatives may be treated differently depending on culture and jurisdiction.

Legal and ethical status varies widely. In many countries, incest is illegal or prohibited for public policy reasons, and penalties may apply regardless of consent, especially when a minor is involved or coercion is present. Some jurisdictions also regulate or ban marriages between certain relatives even when both parties are adults; in other places, marriages between more distant relatives, such as first cousins, may be permitted or governed by specific rules.

Social and psychological aspects: Incest is associated with power imbalances and coercion, abuse, and long-term emotional or psychiatric harm for victims. Legal systems often require protection and investigation when minors are involved.
