LEZs

LEZs, or Low Emission Zones, are designated areas within cities where restrictions are placed on certain types of vehicles to improve air quality. These zones are implemented to reduce the concentration of harmful pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) that are emitted by vehicles. Typically, vehicles that do not meet specific emission standards are either prohibited from entering the zone or are subject to charges.

The emission standards are usually based on the Euro emissions classification system for vehicles. Older and more polluting vehicles, such as those that do not meet Euro 4 or Euro 6 standards for diesel and petrol engines respectively, may be affected. LEZs can be implemented using various methods, including enforcement cameras that monitor vehicle registration plates and issue fines to non-compliant vehicles.

The primary goal of LEZs is to encourage the use of cleaner vehicles, such as electric vehicles, hybrids, or newer, more efficient combustion engine vehicles. By reducing the number of polluting vehicles on the road, cities aim to create healthier environments for their residents, mitigating the negative health impacts associated with poor air quality, such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. LEZs are a common policy tool in many cities across Europe and are being considered or implemented in other parts of the world.
