LEDtelevisioilla, often referred to as LED TVs, are a type of display technology that has become dominant in the consumer television market. Unlike traditional LCD TVs that use fluorescent backlighting, LED TVs utilize light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the light source behind the LCD panel. This fundamental difference allows for several key advantages.

The use of LEDs enables thinner television designs, as they can be arranged in more compact configurations. More importantly, LEDs offer superior control over brightness and contrast. Different types of LED backlighting exist, including edge-lit and full-array local dimming. Edge-lit LED TVs have LEDs placed along the edges of the screen, which can be more energy-efficient but may result in less uniform brightness. Full-array LED TVs have LEDs spread across the entire back of the panel, allowing for more precise control over different zones of the screen. This local dimming capability significantly improves black levels and contrast ratios, leading to a more dynamic and lifelike image.

LED TVs consume less energy compared to older display technologies like plasma or CRT televisions. The lifespan of LEDs is also generally longer. Over time, LED technology has seen continuous improvement, leading to enhanced color reproduction, higher refresh rates, and wider viewing angles. While the term "LED TV" is commonly used, it's important to remember that the image itself is still generated by an LCD panel; the LEDs are solely responsible for the backlighting.
