LCDtaustavaloissa refers to the backlight technology used in Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screens. This backlight is crucial for illuminating the pixels of the LCD panel, allowing images to be visible. Without a backlight, the liquid crystals themselves would not produce light.

Historically, the most common backlight technology was Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFLs). These lamps provided a relatively consistent and broad spectrum of light. However, CCFLs had drawbacks, including higher power consumption, slower startup times, and the presence of mercury, posing environmental concerns.

Modern LCD displays predominantly utilize Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) as their backlight source. This transition to LED backlighting has brought about significant improvements. LEDs are more energy-efficient, consume less power, and offer a longer lifespan compared to CCFLs. They also allow for thinner display designs and faster response times.

LED backlighting can be implemented in different configurations. Edge-lit LED displays place LEDs along the edges of the screen, with light guides directing the illumination across the panel. Direct-lit or full-array LED displays arrange LEDs directly behind the entire LCD panel. This latter configuration often enables local dimming, where specific zones of LEDs can be independently brightened or dimmed, leading to better contrast ratios and deeper blacks.

The choice of backlight technology impacts not only the visual performance of an LCD screen, such as brightness, color accuracy, and contrast, but also its power efficiency and physical dimensions.
