LCDLED

LCDLED is a marketing term used to describe liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that are backlit with light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The term does not represent a distinct display technology; the image is produced by a liquid crystal panel that modulates light, while LEDs provide the illumination behind or around the panel. In common usage, LCDLED refers to LED-backlit LCDs or LED LCDs.

Historically, many LCDs used cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlights. LED backlighting began to replace CCFL in the 2000s, offering advantages such as improved energy efficiency, thinner profiles, higher brightness, and better control of light output. By the 2010s, LED-backlit LCDs became the dominant choice for televisions, computer monitors, and mobile devices.

Backlight configurations vary. Edge-lit LED designs place LEDs along the panel edges with a light guide plate to distribute light, while full-array or direct-lit designs place LEDs behind the screen, often enabling local dimming to improve contrast. Local dimming can enhance dark scenes but may introduce artifacts such as blooming around bright objects.

Benefits of LED backlighting include lower power consumption, longer LED lifespans, and the ability to produce brighter images and broader color gamuts. Potential drawbacks include uneven brightness or color shifts in some areas, higher cost compared with older CCFL models, and occasional backlight uniformity issues in certain environments.

LCDLED technologies are widely used in televisions, computer monitors, and portable displays. The term is primarily a marketing label for LCDs that employ LED backlighting, distinguishing them from CCFL-backlit LCDs and from other technologies such as OLED.
