L1ohjevälimuisti, often referred to as L1 instruction cache or L1i cache, is a small, fast memory component located on the CPU core itself. Its primary function is to store recently used instructions fetched from main memory. This proximity and speed allow the processor to access these instructions much more quickly than if it had to retrieve them directly from the slower main memory or even the L2 cache.

When the CPU needs to execute an instruction, it first checks the L1 instruction cache. If the instruction is present (a cache hit), it is immediately available for execution, significantly speeding up program performance. If the instruction is not found in the L1i cache (a cache miss), the CPU must fetch it from a lower level of cache (L2 or L3) or from main memory. The fetched instruction is then placed in the L1i cache for potential future use, along with nearby instructions that are likely to be needed soon.

The L1 instruction cache is typically smaller than the L1 data cache (L1d cache), as instructions are generally smaller and more predictable in their access patterns than data. The size of the L1i cache is a critical design parameter, balancing the benefits of faster access against the cost and complexity of larger cache memories. Modern processors often have separate L1 instruction and data caches to optimize performance and reduce contention.
