These techniques are fundamental across a wide range of industries, from manufacturing and construction to art and crafts. The choice of cutting technique depends heavily on the material being cut, the desired precision, the thickness of the material, and the available tools and technology.

Common cutting techniques include mechanical methods such as sawing, shearing, and punching. Sawing uses a blade with teeth to remove material through abrasion. Shearing involves applying opposing forces to fracture the material along a line. Punching utilizes a die and punch to create holes or cut shapes from sheet materials.

Thermal cutting methods are also widely employed. Flame cutting, for instance, uses a high-temperature flame, often with an oxygen assist, to melt and remove metal. Plasma cutting uses an ionized gas (plasma) to melt and blow away material, offering a high degree of precision and speed for conductive materials. Laser cutting employs a focused laser beam to vaporize or melt the material, allowing for intricate designs and clean edges.

Waterjet cutting uses a high-pressure stream of water, sometimes mixed with abrasive particles, to erode and cut through a variety of materials, including those sensitive to heat. This method is known for its versatility and ability to cut without inducing thermal stress. Each technique has its own advantages and limitations, influencing its suitability for specific applications.
