Allergic reactions are typically caused by nickel, which is present in some jewelry alloys, leading to itching, redness, and rash. Keloids are raised scars that can form at the piercing site, often requiring treatment such as corticosteroid injections or surgical removal. Piercing migration occurs when the piercing moves from its original position, and tearing can happen if the jewelry is caught or pulled.

Psychologically, piercing disorders can encompass body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) where an individual has a distorted view of their body and may seek excessive piercings to correct perceived flaws, or impulse control issues leading to compulsive piercing. For some, piercings are part of their identity and self-expression, but in cases of disorder, the motivation and impact on well-being become problematic. Diagnosis often involves a thorough assessment of the individual's physical symptoms, their history of piercings, and their psychological state. Treatment approaches vary depending on the specific disorder, ranging from topical treatments and antibiotics for infections to psychotherapy for psychological conditions. Prevention of physical complications involves proper aftercare, choosing reputable piercing studios, and using high-quality, hypoallergenic jewelry.
