Lämpötilakynnykkytkinten, often translated as temperature threshold detectors or thermal trip sensors, are safety devices designed to interrupt an electrical circuit when a specific temperature is reached. These components are crucial in preventing overheating and potential damage or fire in a wide range of electrical and electronic equipment. They operate by utilizing materials that undergo a physical change at a predetermined temperature.

There are several common types of lämpötilakynnykkytkinten. One prevalent design is the bimetallic strip. This strip consists of two different metals with varying coefficients of thermal expansion bonded together. As the temperature rises, one metal expands more than the other, causing the strip to bend. This bending action can be used to physically open or close electrical contacts, thus breaking the circuit. Another type utilizes a phase-change material that melts or solidifies at a specific temperature, triggering a mechanical switch. Some advanced versions might employ semiconductor-based sensors that change their electrical resistance significantly at their threshold temperature, which can then be detected by accompanying electronics to open a circuit.

These devices are typically designed for a single use, meaning once they have tripped and opened the circuit, they must be replaced. This single-pole, single-throw (SPST) normally closed (NC) configuration is common, where the contacts are closed under normal operating temperatures and open when the threshold is exceeded. Their application spans from small household appliances like hair dryers and toasters to more complex industrial machinery and power supplies, ensuring operational safety by acting as a fail-safe mechanism against thermal runaway.
