Lämpökäsittelyvaiheet refers to the stages involved in heat treatment processes. These processes are essential in metallurgy and materials science for modifying the physical and mechanical properties of metals and alloys. The primary goal is to alter the microstructure of the material through controlled heating and cooling cycles.

The typical stages begin with heating the material to a specific temperature, known as the austenitizing temperature for steels. This temperature is critical as it dictates the phase transformations that will occur. Following the heating stage is a holding period, where the material is kept at that temperature for a sufficient duration to allow for uniform temperature distribution and the desired microstructural changes, such as the dissolution of carbides or the formation of austenite.

The next crucial step is the cooling process. The rate of cooling significantly influences the final properties. Rapid cooling, such as quenching in water or oil, can lead to the formation of harder, more brittle structures like martensite. Slower cooling rates, like air cooling or furnace cooling, result in softer, more ductile microstructures such as pearlite or ferrite.

Finally, some heat treatments include a tempering stage, particularly after hardening processes. Tempering involves reheating the material to a temperature below its critical transformation point and then cooling it. This process reduces the internal stresses and brittleness introduced during hardening, improving toughness and ductility while maintaining a significant portion of the achieved hardness. Each of these steps, heating, holding, cooling, and potentially tempering, constitutes a distinct lämpökäsittelyvaihe.
