Lämpödiffuusio, often translated as thermal diffusivity, is a material property that quantifies how quickly temperature propagates through a substance. It is defined as the ratio of thermal conductivity to the product of density and specific heat capacity. Mathematically, it is expressed as alpha = k / (rho * c_p), where alpha is thermal diffusivity, k is thermal conductivity, rho is density, and c_p is specific heat capacity at constant pressure.

A high thermal diffusivity indicates that heat travels rapidly through a material. This is characteristic of materials that are good thermal conductors. Conversely, a low thermal diffusivity signifies slow heat propagation, typical of good thermal insulators. This property is crucial in understanding transient heat transfer phenomena, where temperatures change over time.
