Lähtöpiiri
Lähtöpiiri is a Finnish term that translates to "starting circle" or "departure circle." It is most commonly used in the context of athletic events, particularly track and field, to refer to the designated area from which athletes begin a race. This area is typically marked on the track and is precisely measured to ensure fair competition. For races with staggered starts, such as the 200-meter or 400-meter dash, the lähtöpiiri will consist of a series of curved lines, with each lane having its own starting point offset from the others. This staggering compensates for the fact that the inner lanes are shorter than the outer lanes, ensuring that all competitors run the same distance.
In some sports, the term might also be used more generally to describe any designated starting area.
