Lähisyysilmaisimet, also known as proximity sensors, are electronic devices designed to detect the presence of nearby objects without physical contact. These sensors work by emitting a field or beam of electromagnetic radiation (such as light or radio waves) or a magnetic field. When an object enters this field, it alters the field's properties, which is then detected by the sensor. This change triggers an output signal, indicating the object's presence.

There are several common types of proximity sensors, each utilizing different principles. Inductive proximity sensors detect metallic objects by generating an oscillating magnetic field. When a metal object enters this field, eddy currents are induced within it, which in turn dampen the oscillator. This change is detected by the sensor. Capacitive proximity sensors can detect both metallic and non-metallic objects by sensing changes in capacitance. They work by creating an electrostatic field; when an object enters this field, it changes the capacitance between the sensor's electrodes. Photoelectric proximity sensors use a beam of light. They can operate in through-beam, retro-reflective, or diffuse-reflective modes, with the sensor detecting whether the light beam is interrupted or reflected back. Ultrasonic proximity sensors emit sound waves and measure the time it takes for the waves to return after bouncing off an object.

Proximity sensors are widely used in various applications. In industrial automation, they are crucial for detecting the position of machine parts, counting items on a conveyor belt, and preventing collisions. In consumer electronics, they are found in smartphones to turn off the screen during calls and in automatic doors. They are also employed in robotics, automotive systems (like parking sensors), and security systems. Their ability to operate without direct contact makes them ideal for environments where physical contact could damage the object or sensor, or where contamination is a concern.
