Lääkekylmiöt, also known as drug-induced hypothermia, refers to a significant drop in core body temperature that is a side effect of certain medications. This condition occurs when a drug interferes with the body's thermoregulation mechanisms, leading to an inability to maintain a normal temperature. Various classes of drugs can cause this effect, including certain anesthetics used during surgery, some psychiatric medications, and opioids. The exact mechanism often involves the drug's impact on the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for regulating body temperature, or its influence on peripheral blood vessels, causing them to dilate and lose heat.

Symptoms of lääkekylmiöt can range from mild shivering and paleness to more severe signs such as confusion, lethargy, slow heart rate, and decreased respiration. In extreme cases, it can lead to hypothermia, a life-threatening condition. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, including a review of current medications, and measurement of core body temperature. Treatment focuses on discontinuing the offending medication if possible, and employing warming measures to restore normal body temperature. These measures can include passive warming with blankets and active warming techniques like warmed intravenous fluids or external warming devices. Prevention involves careful consideration of medication side effects and patient monitoring, especially in individuals with pre-existing conditions that might make them more susceptible to temperature dysregulation.
