Kühlölen

Kühlölen are a class of cooling oils used in mechanical engineering and metalworking to dissipate heat and provide lubrication during cutting, forming, and other high-load processes. They are employed to improve tool life, surface finish, and overall process stability by removing heat from the workpiece and the cutting zone.

Kühlölen come in several base-oil types, including mineral oil, synthetic hydrocarbon blends, and bio-based esters. They are typically formulated with additives for antioxidant protection, anti-wear and extreme-pressure performance, corrosion inhibition, defoaming, and viscosity modification. Some formulations are designed as straight oils, while others are used as emulsifiable cooling-lubricant fluids that mix with water for enhanced heat removal.

Applications include metal cutting (milling, turning, drilling), grinding and forming operations, deep drawing and extrusion, as well as lubrication within hydraulic systems and gears that require controlled temperatures. In food- and beverage-related industries, food-grade Kühlölen meet established standards to allow incidental contact with products.

Key properties of Kühlölen include a suitable viscosity at operating temperatures, high thermal stability, a high flash point for safety, good lubricity to reduce tool wear, and resistance to oxidation and foaming. Compatibility with machine seals, gaskets, and filtration systems is important to minimize maintenance needs.

Safety, environmental, and regulatory considerations emphasize proper handling, storage, and waste management. Some formulations are biodegradable or designed for easy recycling, while others require careful disposal according to local regulations. Standards and testing from ISO, ASTM, and national bodies guide performance criteria, labeling, and compatibility with equipment and safety requirements.
