Köysimäiset is a Finnish term that literally translates to "rope-like" and is primarily used in the context of alpine ski touring, mountaineering, and rope guide systems. The word is formed from köysi, meaning rope or cable, and the suffix –mäiset, which denotes resemblance or affiliation. In practice, the term describes a range of equipment and techniques that emulate the properties of a rope, allowing climbers to secure themselves or their gear efficiently on steep terrain.

The earliest documented use of köysimäiset appears in 1930s ski touring manuals from the Finnish Lapland region, where it referred to improvised rope networks created with elastic bungee cords or natural fibers. As alpine equipment evolved, the term expanded to include commercially produced rope-like devices such as tow ropes, nylon safety lines, and adjustable harness systems that maintain a fixed distance between the climber and the anchor point. These devices are typically lightweight, strong, and feature low stretch, making them suitable for both vertical ascent and descent.

In the 1970s, the term entered the world of instructional literature, where it was used to describe a training regimen that emphasized controlled rope placements, repetitive dynamic pulls, and synchronized ledge transitions. Kotani rescue teams later adopted köysimäiset as a standard protocol for rappelling and gas rescue operations.

Modern mountaineering teams occasionally refer to köysimäiset when discussing "rope-guns" which spray a continuous line of taut rope to ferry gear across crevasses. Although the term is less common outside of Finland, it remains an important part of the lexicon for enthusiasts and professionals in Nordic alpine disciplines.
