Functional requirements describe what a system should do, specifying its behavior and the functions it will perform. Examples include user authentication, data processing operations, and specific user interface interactions. They define the capabilities of the system from the user's perspective.

Non-functional requirements, on the other hand, define how the system should perform its functions or the constraints it must operate under. These are often referred to as quality attributes. Further subdivisions exist within these broad categories. For instance, business requirements outline the high-level goals of the organization, while user requirements detail what users need to accomplish with the system. System requirements bridge the gap between user needs and technical specifications. Domain requirements relate to the specific knowledge or constraints of the problem area.
